A little bit of old Florida preserved in a modern world

SKEET AND TRAP COMMITTEE

The fields are looking good thanks to the recent rains, and it’s a great time to get out and hone your wing shooting skills in preparation for the fall hunting season. Some of you may not be aware of the extent of our facilities, so here’s a quick rundown.

Field 1 is set up as a standard skeet field, and is always opened on Sunday and Saturday’s when Charlie is there. Field 2 is utilized for Modern, which is similar to skeet but the throwers oscillate throwing random high and low targets. In fact, Field 2 has oscillating machines in the high and low houses of both sides, all of which be active at once. Woe be the hapless skeet shooter that agrees to shoot a “pullers choice” on field two with all machines active, a humbling game that made Barbara Roberts legendary for her “diabolical” pulling.

Doubles trap can be shot on field 2 also, as there is a bunker with a separate thrower and stations for that purpose. Field 3 is set up strictly for wobble trap, with all the handicap stations and shooting tracks. We don’t seem to have much interest in trap shooting currently, but the RSO on duty can open any field upon request.

The Five Stand was added in 2015, and it’s the large open building to the West of Field 1. Some of the throwers are placed in the surrounding area, in bunkers or in the building itself, and others are rolled out into place. The resulting targets are combined for unique and challenging shots, tend to fly in from every direction, and can be a load of fun to shoot. Menu’s are placed next to each of the five shooting stations with various combinations of birds to be shot, every station being different, and the shooters rotate through each of the five shooting stations between sets. Due to the time necessary to set up a shoot, it’s typically only opened when multiple Committee Members are available to assist. However, most of our fun shoots and all of our Annie Oakley’s are shot on the Five Stand Field. If you get a chance to shoot it, you will enjoy it!

The Skeet & Trap fields are opened almost every Sunday at 9:00am to about Noon. The cost of a round of 25 targets is $8.00, you sign for the rounds and the office simply puts them on your bill for the next month. Be sure to take advantage of the excellent facilities conveniently located next to the airport.

Everyone is welcome to come out and shoot, and new shooters are always encouraged. Just remember it doesn’t really matter how many targets you hit…it’s just plain fun to shoot at them!
