February 2010
The cold and windy weather did not deter our members with their families and friends from having a great time and great food at the 2nd Annual Valentine’s Day .22 Rifle Shoot. Thirty adults and fifteen children sent approximately two thousand .22lr bullets downrange at a variety of moving and clanging poppers and bull’s eye targets. There was an abundance of hamburgers and hot dogs to ward off the chill and plenty of soft drinks and water to wash down all of the delicious food hot off the grill.
Marksmanship and safety medals were once again given to fifteen minor shooters. These youngsters were very impressive in their ability to safely handle a firearm and exhibited remarkable marksmanship when punching out bulls eyes and hitting moving targets.
What does it take to make such a good, fun, safe shoot happen? Thanks must go to the Indian Hammock Range Safety Officers and their friends, Indian Hammock personnel, and the parents who encouraged their children to participate in the event. The eye and hearing protection for the shooters and spectators was again donated by the Skeet/Trap Committee. Walt Hornberger, Bob Morrison, David Blenker and Matt Rector supervised the 25yd range and were tireless in their efforts to make the event safe and fun for all participants. Jon Newman and his guest, Mike Dugan, took charge of the 50yd range and obtained some impressive results from their expert coaching of novice and experienced shooters on how to take out the center of a bull’s eye at 50yds. A major contributor to the success of this event was of course the food and preparation! Our Indian Hammock office personnel, Marilyn, ordered all of the food and drinks for the lunch provided by the Rifle/Pistol Range Committee. Bob Benz supplied the grill and the master chef was Al Weidenfeller. Al can create cheeseburgers and hotdogs to taste like the absolutely best you ever had. Janice Whiting deserves a major thank you for organizing the delivery of food and drinks and ice to the coolers and refrigerators in a downpour of rain, chilling wind and my griping the day before at the Indian Hammock Lodge.
